Interesting motorcycle fact about Woolwich

A special place for many motorcycle fans in the Woolwich, Plumstead and South East London area was the Matchless/AJS motorcycle factory. It lay between Maxey Road and Burrage Road, on the northern side of the main rail line. History tells us that you could stand at the wire link fence and stare across the rail line to the gleaming British built motorbikes waiting to be loaded on to the trains and lorries for delivery. It was a hub of industry, with bikes being wheeled out of the factory and pushed up and down various ramps. Men dressed in grey overalls would straddle a bike, give the crank a kick and ride the bike away down the other end to some distant shed. Intermittently, big black steam trains huffed and puffed between the bikes and those standing on the train platform. The smell of the smoke leaving a decidedly coal-like taste in the mouth.

On Sunday 9th September 2007, following a long campaign to have the site where the factory once stood marked, a meeting was held within the Royal Arsenal as a base from which to witness the unveiling of a plaque on a low wall at the junction of Plumstead and Maxey Roads.

The event was blessed with glorious weather and a fine demonstration of racing machinery took place along the central spine road of the Arsenal.

A real peice of motorcycling history gone but never forgotten.
