Motorcycle History - Lee - South East London - SE12
Did you know that just under the railway bridge of Lee Railway station stood a little motorcycle shop called Kickstart Motorcycles. It was a small shop in size but it was run by a man with a big heart. A man passionate about motorcycles and helping out others in the local motorcycling community. People from all walks of life. That man was Kenneth Johnson, known as Ken to everyone. Ken owned Kickstart Motorcycles on Burnt Ash Hill in Lee for nearly 40 years. Sadly Ken passed away in April 2019. Even as the author and biker writing this article I would visit Kickstart motorcycles as a teenager on my little Honda MTX 125. I remember other bikers would turn up just to have a chat with Ken, the shop was a meeting place for so many bikers in the local area. It was also the place of choice for motorcycle MOT's for bike across the South East and Kent. Once while Ken was giving my bike an MOT a young lad came in with a scooter that had a flat rear tyre, Ken said to him give us a minute mate I will help you, clearly the lad was 16 or 17 and Ken fixed the puncher for him for free. I would say he was an Old Skool biker and would help people out. Unconditionally. Ken will be missed and so will Kickstart Motorcycles. RIP. Keep riding up in heaven.
