Ultra Low Emission Zone is Expanding

About the Ultra Low Emission Zone

The Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) currently covers central London, in the same area as the Congestion Charge zone. The congestion Charge zone will not be expanding. From 25 October 2021, the ULEZ will be expanded to create a single, larger zone, covering the inner London area up to the North Circular Road and South Circular Road to assist in improving the air quality of Londoners.

Map Showing ULEZ expansion below

The current London ULEZ is in operation 24 hours a day, every single day of the year, including bank holidays, weekends, with the only exception being Christmas day. The new expansion of the ULEZ will also follow suit. TFL have already stipulated that there will be signs at every boundary point to let you know when you are entering the ULEZ. Number plates will be read by cameras this will tell TFL if your vehicle meets the ULEZ standards, and if your vehicle doesn't you will have to pay the daily charge to TFL which is currently £12.50 daily.

Does my motorcycle meet the ULZ standards?

The ULEZ standards for a motorcycle is Euro 3 (NOx) this is generally motorcycles made after 2007 but many made before this date meet the standards too. Your best bet is to check your reg on the TFL website. You can also get your motorcycle tested at an approved testing centre. Many pre-Euro 3 motorcycles emit very low levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx). NOx levels are the critical figure that Transport for London use to the limit is 0.15 g/Km and there are two ways to determine if your bikes emissions are this low. The first is to use documentation. This involves checking your V5C or obtaining a Certificate of Conformity from your bike’s manufacturer. As already mentioned the second option is to have a test from a dealer that is fitted with approved testing gear and create a direct upload of test data to Transport for London’s database. The service is called the National Emissions Test Centre (NETC).
